ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team claimed the doubles point and the first four singles matches off the court en route to a 5-2 win over Iowa on Saturday afternoon (March 29) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverines began the dual by claiming the doubles point for the 12th time in 18 matches, earning victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Michigan's No. 2 pairing of senior Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) and freshman Kevin Wong (Hong Kong/Diocesa) were first off the court, posting a quick 8-3 decision over Matt Hagan and Joey White. With the win, Bernstein and Wong improved to 10-2 during the dual-match season. Shortly thereafter, U-M's No. 3 tandem of junior Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep) and redshirt junior Justin Rossi (Novi, Mich./Laurel Springs Prep) clinched the point with a hard-fought 8-7 (5) win over the Hawkeye duo of Chase Tomlins and Jonas Dierckx.
Wong gave the Wolverines a 2-0 lead by defeating Michael Swank, 6-0, 6-2 in the first singles match off the court at No. 6, and Rossi earned a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Estenssoro at No. 3 to give U-M a 3-0 advantage.
Petrone clinched the dual for the Maize and Blue, moving past Dierckx at the top of the lineup for his eighth dual-match victory of the season. The victory marked Petrone's first-ever win at the No. 1 singles position.
With the fate of the dual already decided, senior Barrett Franks (Christchuch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys') secured Michigan's fifth point of the dual with a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10) decision over Dominic Patrick at the No. 5 position. The Hawkeyes won the final two singles matches off the court, notching victories at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots to register their only two points of the match.
The Wolverines return to action on Sunday (March 30), hosting Nebraska at noon at the Varsity Tennis Center. Admission to the match is free. Following the match, all children in eight grade and under are invited to participate in a free tennis clinic put on by the Michigan men's tennis team as part of USTA Kids Day on Campus.
