IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team claimed the doubles point and all six singles matches en route to a 7-0 sweep of Iowa on Sunday afternoon (April 14) at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center. With the win, the Wolverines extend their win streak to six consecutive matches.
U-M earned the doubles point for the 12th time this season, claiming victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Iowa earned an 8-4 win at No. 1, before U-M's No. 2 pair of juniors Barrett Franks (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys') and Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) evened the count with an 8-6 victory.
With the doubles score knotted at one apiece, sophomore Michael Zhu (Princeton, N.J./Keystone National) and redshirt sophomore Justin Rossi (Novi, Mich./Laurel Springs Prep) secured the initial point for the Maize and Blue with a 9-8 (11) decision over Joey White and Michael Swank at the No. 3 spot.
With a 1-0 lead heading into singles play, Michigan won five of six first sets to take control of the match. Bernstein was first off the court for the Wolverines in singles action, giving U-M a 2-0 lead after a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Joey White at the No. 5 singles position. Zhu provided U-M with its third point of the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Matt Hagan at the No. 3 spot.
Senior Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan) clinched the match for Michigan, cruising to a 6-4, 6-1 win over Jonas Dierckx at the top of the singles lineup. With the victory, King -- who comes in at No. 13 in the latest ITA singles rankings -- improved to 19-1 in dual-match competition.
Buzzi kept the Maize and Blue perfect on the afternoon with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 4 over Juan Estensorro. Franks completed the Wolverine singles sweep with a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 win over Garret Dunn at the No. 2 position. Buzzi has won six consecutive singles matches, while Franks has posted 10 straight victories and is 16-2 in dual-match competition.
Michigan will conclude Big Ten dual play next weekend, traveling to State College, Pa., to face Penn State at 3 p.m. on Friday (April 19) before hosting Ohio State at the Varsity Tennis Center at noon on Sunday (April 21).
