ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team claimed a narrow doubles point before winning four-of-six singles matches to secure a 5-2 victory over Indiana on Friday night (April 18) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines improved to 5-5 in Big Ten Conference play with the win.

The Maize and Blue earned the first point of the match with doubles victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The U-M tandem of juniors Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep) and Michael Zhu (Princeton, N.J./Keystone National) struck first, notching an 8-6 decision over Chris Essick and Stefan Lugonjic at the No. 3 spot. Minutes later, the duo of senior Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Old Bethpage JFK HS) and freshman Kevin Wong (Hong Kong/Diocesa) clinched the point, earning a late break to secure an 8-6 victory over Dimitrije Tasic and Sven Lalic at the No. 2 position. With the victory, Bernstein owns 74 career doubles wins, which rank 10th all-time in program history.

Senior Alex Buzzi (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep) put the Wolverines ahead 2-0 after defeating Essick, 6-3, 6-2, in the first singles match off the court at No. 6. Buzzi has won three consecutive singles matches and owns 11 dual-match victories this season.

After Indiana tied the dual with back-to-back victories at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions, Bernstein cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Lalic at No. 2 to give Michigan a 3-2 lead.

Needing just one win in the final two matches, the Wolverines claimed both to put the dual away. Senior/junior Justin Rossi (Novi, Mich./Laurel Springs Prep) clinched the match from the No.3 position, posting a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (2) decision over Daniel Bednarczyk. Seconds later, senior Barrett Franks (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys') gave U-M its fifth and final point of the match, notching a come-from-behind three-set win over Elliott Yee (4-6, 6-3, 6-3).

The Wolverines close out their regular-season schedule on Sunday (April 20), hosting Purdue at noon at the Varsity Tennis Center. Sunday's match is designated as Senior Day and will honor the careers of graduating players Shaun Bernstein, Alex Buzzi, Barrett Franks, Justin Rossi and Vlad Stefan. Admission to the match is free.
