WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The second-seeded University of Michigan men's tennis team was defeated, 4-1, by top-seeded Ohio State on Sunday afternoon (April 30) in the Big Ten Tournament final at the Schwartz Tennis Center.

Michigan's comeback attempt in doubles play fell short, with losses on courts one and two. At No. 1 doubles, the duo of Jathan Malik and Connor Johnston fell to the 14th-ranked pairing of Herkko Pollanen and Mikael Torpegaard, 6-4. Runhao Hua and Alex Knight dropped court two, 6-2, and U-M yielded the doubles point for the sixth time on the year.

Myles Schalet and Kevin Wong battled back to a 5-4 score after being down as much as 4-2 earlier in the match at No. 3 doubles before being abandoned after the clinching point.

After Ohio State extended the lead to 2-0 with a victory at No. 1 singles, U-M cut the deficit in half with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court two by Knight over 41st-ranked JJ Wolf.

At No. 6 singles, Carter Lin battled back to six-all in the second set after dropping the first set, before the match was abandoned.

Ohio State got victories on courts three and five to clinch the match and garner the 2017 Big Ten Tournament championship.

Michigan will await final seeding for the 2017 NCAA DI Men's Tennis Tournament to see where it will head for the regional round. The selection show will take place on Tuesday (May 2) at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.
