Wolverines Fall Short in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The 17th-ranked University Michigan men's tennis team was unable to come back from dropping the doubles point, falling to No. 16-ranked Stanford, 4-1, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday night (May 13) at the Traube Tennis Center.

Michigan was unable to pick up the doubles point, failing to earn the first point of the match for the seventh time this season. After Alex Knight and Runhao Hua earned a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, Stanford claimed courts three and one to earn the first point of the match.

U-M fell behind 3-0 as Stanford made quick work at No. 1 and 5 singles, taking both courts in straight sets. The Wolverines jumped on the board and cut the deficit to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory by Carter Lin at No. 6 singles -- his team-leading eighth win in a row in singles play.

On court three, Knight battled to a third set with a 6-3 triumph in set two, after dropping the first set 6-0. The third set came down to a tiebreaker, where Stanford's Kumar took the edge 7-6 (6) and sealed a 4-1 team victory,

Myles Schalet (court three) and Hua (court four) were both battling in their third sets before the match was clinched.

Michigan concludes the season with 23 wins, the third-best total in program history and the most since winning 26 matches in 1988.
