TULSA, Okla. -- Senior Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan HS) and junior Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team concluded doubles play at the ITA All-American Championships on Friday (Oct. 5), dropping an 8-5 decision to Virginia's Alex Domijan and Harrison Richmond in the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The Wolverine duo, ranked No. 3 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason poll, finished the week with a 2-1 record in the prestigious national tournament. King and Bernstein advanced to the quarterfinals by posting a 9-7 victory over Columbia's Ashok Narayan and Max Schur in Thursday's (Oct. 4) opening round before securing a 8-4 win over Ohio State's 44th-ranked tandem of Connor Smith and Peter Kobelt in the second round.
Junior Spencer Newman (Miami, Fla./Kaplan HS) wrapped up play in the singles consolation bracket on Friday, going 1-2 in his first tournament with the Maize and Blue. Newman rebounded in the back draw after suffering his first loss of the season to Texas' Soren Hess-Olesen, 7-6 (4), 6-4, in the first round of the main draw. He went on to post a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Wake Forest's Daniel Kreyman before dropping one to No. 89 Francisco Dias of George Washington, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7). The match was decided in a back-and-forth third-set tiebreaker, where Dias prevailed, 9-7.
King concluded singles play at the ITA event on Thursday, falling to No. 85 Roberto Quiroz of USC in the opening round of the main draw (6-2, 6-4) before being defeated by No. 20 Andre Dome of Cal Poly, 6-0, 6-2, in the consolation bracket.
Earlier in the week (Mon-Tue., Oct. 1-2), Bernstein and sophomore Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep) were eliminated from the singles qualifying round at the ITA All-American Championships. Bernstein won his opening-round match against Florida State's Andres Bucaro, 6-1, 7-6 (1) before falling to Oklahoma's Axel Alvarez, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in the second round. Petrone lost in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) to Drake's Robin Goodman in the first round of the same draw.
In the doubles qualifying round, the first-time tandem of Petrone and Newman dropped an 8-6 decision to George Washington's Alex van-Gils and Dias in the event's second doubles round.
