SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team continued its 2012-13 campaign at the Tom Fallon Invitational, held Friday through Sunday (Oct. 5-7) at Notre Dame's Eck Tennis Pavilion. Five of U-M's nine players were in action over the weekend, and the Wolverines won nine of 15 matches in singles competition and went 2-4 in doubles play during the three-day event, which also featured players from Alabama, Michigan State and Notre Dame.
Spearheading a solid singles effort for Michigan was sophomore Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep), who went 2-1 in singles play. Petrone, ranked 51st in the ITA preseason men's singles rankings, picked up straight-set victories over Michigan State's Denis Bogatov (6-3, 6-1) and Alabama's Becker O'Shaugnessey (7-6, 6-4) on Friday and Saturday before dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision to 24th-ranked Greg Andrews of Notre Dame on Sunday.
Sophomore Michael Zhu (Princeton, N.J./Keystone) posted two singles victories for the Maize and Blue, including a come-from-behind super-tiebreaker win over 59th-ranked Daniil Proskura of Alabama, 4-6, 7-6, 1-0, on Saturday. Juniors Barrett Franks (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley) and Alex Buzzi (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep) began the weekend with two singles wins apiece, before each fell in his final match of the invitational.
Newcomer Vlad Stefan (Bucharest, Romania) went 1-2 in singles action during his first event with the Wolverines. The sophomore notched a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 1-0 win over Michigan State's Harry Jadun on Friday before dropping matches to Alabama's Jarryd Botha (6-4, 4-6, 1-0) and Notre Dame's Billy Pecor (7-6, 6-2) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Leading the charge in doubles for the Maize and Blue was Zhu, who teamed with Stefan for an 8-6 victory over Alabama's David Vieyra and Proskura and paired with Stefan for a 8-4 win over Notre Dame's Ryan Bandy and Ken Sabacinski.
