PHUKET, Thailand -- Freshman Kevin Wong (Hong Kong/Diocesa) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team will represent his native country of Hong Kong at the 2014 Davis Cup, to be held Friday-Sunday (Feb. 14-16) at the Thanyapura Sports and Leisure Club in Phuket.
Competing in Group II of the Asia/Oceania Zone, Wong will team with former Duke four-time All-American Phillip King in the tournament's doubles competition.
"It always feels good to represent your country and I am really looking forward to this opportunity," Wong said. "Playing for your country is a special feeling. Just like playing for Michigan, I enjoy playing for a team more than competing in individual events."
Wong is off to a strong start to his collegiate career, holding overall marks of 8-6 in singles and 10-4 in doubles. Wong and senior Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage) are 8-1 this season and are No. 55 in the latest ITA Men's Doubles Rankings after recording five straight victories to start dual-match play. Wong has also excelled in singles action and is 2-0 from the No. 6 singles through the first month of dual-match competition.
U-M takes a break from dual-match play this week before returning home to the Varsity Tennis Center for a 6 p.m. matchup against LSU on Friday, Feb. 21.
