EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Junior Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team was named to the 2014 All-Big Ten Conference team, the league announced on Thursday evening (April 24) at the annual Big Ten Tournament banquet.

Petrone was selected to the All-Big Ten first team after finishing the regular season with a 12-12 dual-match record, including a 5-6 mark in conference singles action. U-M's No. 1 singles player for the majority of the spring season, Petrone posted three ranked victories during the 2014 campaign, including a three-set triumph over 2014 Big Ten Athlete of the Year Farris Gosea on Jan. 26. In doubles competition, Petrone holds a 20-11 overall record, including an 8-3 mark in Big Ten play.

Senior Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) is Michigan's Sportsmanship Award honoree. The student-athletes chosen for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award are individuals that have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. A three-time captain, Bernstein owns 121 career victories for the Maize and Blue, including 76 doubles wins, which rank 10th all-time in program history.

After earning a 4-0 victory over Wisconsin in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, the sixth-seeded Wolverines will take on third-seed Penn State in the quarterfinals tomorrow (Friday, April 25) at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts in East Lansing, Mich. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
