ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's tennis head coach Bruce Berque announced today (Friday, June 22) the addition of transfer Spencer Newman (Miami, Fla./Kaplan Prep) to the Wolverine program. Newman, who posted a 43-17 singles record through two seasons at the University of Florida, is the second transfer to join Michigan this offseason. He will have junior eligibility in 2012-13.

"The addition of Spencer Newman is huge for our program," said Berque. "Spencer has proven himself to be a winner at every level. He is a relentless competitor who works extremely hard at both school and tennis. We are all very excited for the tremendous contribution he will make during his upcoming years in Ann Arbor."

Ranked No. 65 in the final ITA national singles rankings, Newman led the Gators last season with a 32-9 singles record and went 16-5 in dual matches while appearing predominantly at the No. 4 position. In tournament play, he advanced to the quarterfinals at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships and later rallied from a first-round defeat to earn a berth in the consolation final at the SEC Indoor Championships. He went 8-7 against ranked opposition, earning notable wins over Georgia's then-No. 26 Ignacio Taboada (6-3, 6-7, 10-3), Georgia Tech's then-No. 34 Juan Spir (7-5, 6-1; 6-2, 6-2) and Mississippi State's then-No. 36 George Coupland (6-3, 6-2).

In doubles play, Newman posted a 31-8 record last season -- another Florida team best -- and was ranked nationally with two different partners, peaking at No. 62 in the final ITA rankings. He earned a runner-up finish at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the SEC Indoor Championships.

A native of Miami, Fla., Newman was a five-star, top-15 national recruit, according to tennisrecruiting.net. He reached the semifinals at the 2009 USTA International Spring Championships, advanced to the quarterfinals the following year, and won the Orange Co. Winter Designated BG18 in 2010.

Newman will join the Wolverines' eight returning players and fellow transfer Vlad Stefan (Bucharest, Romania). Stefan, who recently completed his freshman year at the University of Maryland, is listed No. 97 in the final ITA singles rankings.
