Aug. 16, 2010

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's tennis head coach Bruce Berque announced Monday (Aug. 16) the addition of Alex Buzzi (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Preparatory) to the 2010-11 squad.

"Alex is a smart player with great instincts for the game," said Berque. "He has very good all court skills in singles and doubles, and competes extremely well. We expect Alex to make a significant contribution to our program, and we are thrilled that he has decided to join us at Michigan."

Earlier this month, Buzzi helped the USTA Florida Section U18 team win the USTA Boys National Team championship. At Gulliver Prep in Miami, Buzzi was a four-time Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) 2A state champion. As a senior, he took second place in the Florida Sectional singles main draw and also reached the semifinals in doubles. He also reached the Round of 32 at the USTA Boys U18 National Clay Court Championships last month.

Buzzi is the No. 54-ranked prep player in the country (No. 9 in Florida) and a five-star recruit as rated by tennisrecruiting.net. He is the fourth member of this season's stellar recruiting class, which is ranked third nationally by tennisrecruiting.net, joining blue-chip prospects Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) and Justin Rossi (Novi, Mich./Laurel Springs Prep) and overseas import Barrett Franks (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys').
