ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's tennis sophomore Vlad Stefan (Bucharest, Romania) earned an at-large bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, to be held Nov. 8-11, at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Stefan is currently ranked No. 53 in the nation in singles and holds a 6-3 record this fall. He reached the finals of the ITA Midwest Championships (Oct. 22), winning five straight matches at the regional tournament before falling to Ohio State's No. 35-ranked Peter Kobelt in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-1) in the championship match.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships will be hosted by Columbia University. The prominent event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for men and women.
Gaining automatic entry into the tournament are champions from the USTA/ITA Division I Regional Championships held across the country in October, winners of the USTA/ITA National Small College "Super Bowl," and the consolation champions, doubles finalists, men's singles quarterfinalists and women's singles semifinalists from the ITA Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships.
