Dec. 3, 2013
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's tennis head coach Bruce Berque announced Tuesday (Dec. 3) the additions of Davis Crocker (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and Alex Knight (Miami Shores, Fla./Michael Kropp HS) to the 2013-14 squad.
Both players will be joining the team before the 2014 dual-match season.
"We are all extremely excited that Alex and Davis will be joining us for the upcoming season," Berque said. "Both have accomplished a lot in their junior careers and have a tremendous amount of room for development, and we expect that they will both make terrific contributions to our program during their stay in Ann Arbor. They are terrific students, have great passion for the game, are extremely hard working and understand what a terrific opportunity they have at Michigan."
Crocker hails from Kalamazoo, Mich., and will graduate from Loy Norrix High School. He is currently rated a five-star recruit by the recruiting service tennisrecruiting.net, and was ranked as high as No. 27 in the country. The No. 2-ranked prospect in the state of Michigan, Crocker is a three-time Division II Michigan High School Athletic Association state champion, claiming the state singles title in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
Last month, he was named Mr. Tennis for the state of Michigan after becoming only the fifth person in the history of Michigan to win three state titles at the No. 1 singles position. Crocker finished his high school tennis career with a 108-9 record, losing one match each as a sophomore and junior, and none during his senior campaign. In August, Crocker showcased his ability against the top prep players in the country, advancing to the third round of the USTA Boys 18 National Championships in Kalamazoo.
A product of Miami Shores, Fla., Knight has been ranked as high as No. 20 nationally. He is currently the No. 61-ranked prep player in the country (No. 11 in Florida) and a five-star recruit as rated by tennisrecruiting.net. Knight, who will graduate from Michael Kropp High School, currently owns a 52-25 overall record, including a 15-7 mark against other five-star players.
Knight is a Florida High School Athletic Association 4A state champion in both singles and doubles. As a junior, he won the Florida Sectional singles main draw on his way to be named Miami Dade County Co-Player of the Year and an All-American by the National High School Tennis All-American Foundation. Earlier this month, the blue-chip recruit reached the singles and doubles final at the National Open in Pensacola, Fla.
Michigan will graduate three seniors following the 2013-14 campaign. Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK), Alex Buzzi Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and Barrett Franks (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys') will exhaust their eligibility after the completion of the dual match season.
In November, the Wolverines signed two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the start of the early signing period. Runhao (Leo) Hua (Shanghai, China/Edison Academics) and Cameron Norrie (Auckland, New Zealand/Macleans College) have committed to join the U-M tennis program for the 2014-15 season.
