Bernstein, Franks, Petrone Voted Team Captains

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's tennis head coach Bruce Berque announced Thursday (Dec. 5 ) that seniors Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.J./Old Bethpage JFK HS) and Barrett Franks (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys') and junior Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep) have been voted by their teammates to serve as team captains for the 2014 season.

"I am proud of our team for selecting Shaun, Barrett and Alex as team captains for the upcoming season," Berque said. "Each brings a unique set of leadership qualities to the table, and I have complete confidence that, together, they will do a fantastic job as our team leaders."

A three-time team captain, Bernstein went 14-14 in doubles competition during his junior campaign. Earlier this fall, Bernstein and freshman Kevin Wong (Hong Kong/Diocesa) advanced to the doubles semifinals at the Big Ten Indoor Tennis Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. Bernstein, who went 3-3 during the fall in singles competition, also advanced to the quarterfinals of the main draw at the Big Ten Indoor Championships.

Franks, who served as a team captain with Bernstein in 2013, was selected to the All-Big Ten second team last season after finishing his junior campaign with a career-best 17-7 dual-match record, including a 9-1 mark in conference singles action. The Christchurch, New Zealand, native won 11 of his last 12 singles matches to conclude the regular season, including one match from the No. 2 position and five from the No. 3 spot. In doubles competition, Franks posted a 16-9 overall record and a 3-4 mark in Big Ten play.

Petrone registered a 13-18 singles record, including a 4-5 mark in Big Ten duals, during his sophomore season and went 14-13 in doubles competition. He teamed with Michael Zhu (Princeton, N.J./Keystone National) during the fall season to post a 3-2 doubles record and advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Columbus, Ohio.

The Wolverines concluded their fall schedule last month. Michigan returns to action following the New Year, heading to the Key Biscayne Individuals Jan. 5-7 in Key Biscayne, Fla. U-M opens its dual-match season on Jan. 18 when the Wolverines host a Western Michigan (9 a.m.) and Toledo (7 p.m.) in a day-night doubleheader at the Varsity Tennis Center
