MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- In the University of Michigan men's track and field season opener, five different Wolverines won events at the non-scoring Chippewa Open on Friday night (Jan. 12) at Jack Skoog Indoor Track in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
Senior Jeff Porter (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) earned a victory in the 60-meter hurdles (7.95), the event that he achieved All-American status in last season when he placed fourth at the NCAA Championships. Freshman Frank Shotwell (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and Rob Fiorillo (Holly, Mich./Holly) also registered strong performances in the race, placing fourth (8.36) and fifth (8.50) respectively.
In his collegiate debut, Shotwell not only impressed on the track but in the field events as well. He captured first place in the high jump for the Wolverines, jumping to a mark of 6-02. Michigan also claimed the next two finishers as freshman Andrew Schrotenboer (Holland, Mich./Holland) and sophomore/freshman John Kipf (Monroe, Mich./St. Mary Catholic Central) each recorded a score of 6-0 to tie for second place.
Displaying their depth in the 400-meter dash, the Wolverines swept the top-four spots in race and finished with five runners in the top six spots. Michigan was led by senior Stann Waithe (Towson, Md./Loch Raven), who clocked 48.93 to take the victory, and junior Andrew Wechter (Shelby, Ohio/Shelby), who crossed the finish line in second with a mark of 49.22. Shortly behind were sophomore Andre Barnes (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) in third (50.03), freshman Ricky Fleming (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) in fourth (50.49) and freshman Kyle Terpak (Riverview, Mich./Riverview) in sixth (51.41).
Waithe also had a strong showing in the 200-meter dash, where he placed runner-up with a mark of 22.05. Barnes and sophomore Adam Harris (Wheaton, Ill./North) were right on the heels of Waithe, crossing the line in third (22.09) and fourth (22.16) respectively. In addition to this performance, Harris took second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.78, just 0.07 seconds off of the event winner.
Also claiming victory was sophomore/freshman Brendan Lodge (Narragansett, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) in the weight throw landing a mark of 58-04. Fifth-year senior Paul Sarantos (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) took second place in the event, recording a distance of 54-07.25. Sarantos earned a victory of his own in the shot put, where he recorded a mark of 53-08.25. Fellow Wolverine sophomore Sean Pruitt (Cato, Wis./Valders) took third with a mark of 51-05.75.
Other strong performances by the Wolverines came from senior John D'Arcy (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) and junior/sophomore Dan Harmsen (Rockford, Mich./Rockford). Both runners were just fractions of a second away from victory. D'Arcy scored the second highest time in the 800-meter run, clocking 1:57.58 just 0.46 seconds behind the event winner. Harmsen was third in the 600-meter run crossing the line in 1:22.08, 0.33 off of the fastest time.
The Maize and Blue will continue the 2007 campaign next weekend when they host the Red Simmons/Jack Harvey Invitational on from Fri-Sat. Jan. 19-20, at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
