SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team competed for the second time this season and first time in three weeks at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational on Friday (Feb. 7) inside the Loftus Center.
Fifth-year senior Ethan Dennis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) led the Wolverines in the field, finishing runner-up in the weight throw with a toss of 20.22 meters (66-4.25).
Seniors Herman Washington (Blacklick, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) and Erick Gavin (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) each advanced to the 60-meter hurdle semifinals with times of 8.03 and 8.14, respectively, to take second and seventh. In the semifinals, Washington ran the fifth-fastest time at 8.02 to move on to Saturday's finals, while Gavin fell short with a time of 8.26.
In his collegiate debut in the 5,000-meter run, sophomore/freshman Tony Smoragiewicz (Rapid City, S.D./Rapid City Central) was Michigan's top finisher, using a time of 14:26.22 to finish sixth overall.
Action will resume on Saturday (Feb. 8) at 10 a.m. at the Loftus Center for the final day of the Meyo Invitational. Several members of U-M's distance squad will make their season debut, including senior/junior Mark Beams (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) and junior/sophomore Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) in the Ryan Shay 3,000-meter run, as well as senior/junior Morsi Rayyan (Dewitt, Mich./St. Johns) in the prestigious Meyo Mile. Senior/junior Cody Riffle (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) will highlight the field events in the shot put.
