SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team had four student-athletes place in the top five of their events, led by fifth-year senior Bradley James' (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett) victory in the high jump, during day two of competition at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 8) inside the Loftus Center.
James won the high jump by clearing 2.05 meters (six feet, 8.75 inches). Freshman Louis Lamberti (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey) finished in sixth place, having cleared 2.0 meters (six feet, 6.75 inches), and sophomore Stephen Sykes (Litchfield, Mich./Litchfield) placed 10th by clearing 1.95 meters (six feet, 4.75 inches). Lamberti set a personal best with his jump, while Sykes matched his career best.
Junior/sophomore Derek Sievers (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) placed third in the shot put with a career-best throw of 17.96 meters (58 feet, 11.25 inches). Senior/junior Justin Gaumer (Holly, Mich./Holly) finished three places behind Sievers in sixth place with a throw of 16.36 meters (53 feet, 8.25 inches).
In the 60m hurdles, senior Herman Washington (Blacklick, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) ran to a fourth-place finish with a time of 8.03 seconds.
Junior/sophomore Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) finished fourth in the 3000m run, known as the Ryan Shay 3K, clocking a career-best time of 8:07.08. Ferlic's time was 10 seconds faster than his previous mark of 8:17.42 set almost one year to the day (Feb. 9, 2013). Senior/junior Mark Beams (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) was four spots behind Ferlic in eighth place with a career-best time of 8:12.65.
Michigan will split its squad three ways for a trio of two-day meets for next weekend's competition on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15. The majority of the team will travel to Geneva, Ohio, for a preview of the Big Ten Indoor Championship site at the SPIRE Invitational, while other members of the team will head to Albuquerque, N.M., for the New Mexico Don Kirby Invitational, and select distance runners will go to Seattle, Wash., for the Husky Classic.
