The University of Michigan men's track and field team was represented by student-athletes at three different meets on Friday (Feb. 14), with the majority of its squad at the SPIRE Invitational, while select members also participated in the New Mexico Don Kirby Invitational as well as the Husky Classic.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Fifth-year senior Ethan Dennis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) was the lone Wolverine in action at New Mexico's Don Kirby Invitational today, finishing fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 20.26 meters (66-5.75).
Hurdlers Erick Gavin and Herman Washington will compete in the 60-meter hurdle prelims tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 15) at 10:45 a.m. MST. New Mexico's Albuquerque Convention Center will be the site of the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 14-15.
SEATTLE, Wash. -- Four Wolverine distance runners competed in the 5,000-meter run at the Husky Invitational, with a pair running in the highly anticipated invitational section and one each participating in the fastest two heats of the non-invitational section.
Among many of the top distance runners in the country, senior/junior Morsi Rayyan (Dewitt, Mich./St. Johns) led the Maize and Blue in the invitational section, finishing 12th overall in 13:57.07. Junior/sophomore Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) followed Rayyan across the line in 14:05.35 -- good enough for 14th place. It marked the collegiate debut in the indoor 5,000m for Rayyan and Ferlic.
Senior/junior Mark Beams (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) competed in the fastest section of the 5,000-meter run, recording a personal-best time of 14:07.10, to finish 10th in his heat and 10th overall out of the 83 runners competing in the non-invitational 5,000-meter run.
Sophomore/freshman Tony Smoragiewicz (Rapid City, S.D./Rapid City Central) clocked a time of 14:28.22 to finish sixth in heat three and 28th overall in the non-invitational 5,000-meter run.
Michigan will not have any athletes competing tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 15) on the second and final day of the Husky Classic.
GENEVA, Ohio -- Michigan had four athletes finish in the top 10 in seeded events on the opening day at the SPIRE Invitational.
In the 600-meter run, junior Ben Reed (Hemlock, Mich./Midland) and junior/sophomore Zac Miklja (Rochester, Mich./Avondale) finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in times of 1:20.01 and 1:23.30, which are both new personal records.
Junior/sophomores August Pappas (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) and Scotty Albaugh (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott) teamed up in the 5,000-meter run to finish back-to-back in ninth and 10th place, respectively, with times of 14:32.27 and 14:32.66. It was a new personal best for Pappas and the collegiate debut in the indoor 5,000-meter run for Albaugh.
Several Wolverines will be in action tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 15) for the final day at the SPIRE Institute, which will be the site of the 2014 Big Ten Indoor Championships on Feb. 28-March 1.
