GENEVA, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team scored points in the shot put, 3,000-meter run and distance medley relay to position itself in eighth place after the first day of the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Friday (Feb. 28) inside the SPIRE Institute.

Junior/sophomore Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) and senior/junior Morsi Rayyan (Dewitt, Mich./St. Johns) combined to score seven points in the 3,000-meter run with fifth- and sixth-place performances, respectively. Both Ferlic (7:56.60) and Rayyan (7:57.08) ran career-best times.

In U-M's season debut in the distance medley relay, senior/junior Nathan Karr (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) ran the first leg, fifth-year senior Troy Sneller (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) ran second, sophomore Nate Chapman (Auburn Hills, Mich./Avondale) took the handoff for the third leg, and junior/sophomore Jeff Sattler (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) finished the race, crossing the finish line in a time of 9:48.32. Their efforts culminated in a sixth-place finish and three points toward the 11-point total.

Junior/sophomore Derek Sievers (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) earned Michigan its first point of the day after finishing eighth in the shot put. His mark of 17.57 meters (57-7.75) came on his second throw and remained his best throughout his additional three throws in the finals.

Advancing past the 60-meter hurdle prelims were seniors Erick Gavin (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) and Herman Washington (Blacklick, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln). Gavin took the top spot in his heat with a career-best time of 7.95 seconds, while Washington grabbed the eighth overall position into the nine-man final with his time of 7.93 seconds. Gavin and Washington will compete in the finals tomorrow at 2:50 p.m.

The Big Ten Indoor Championships will resume tomorrow (Saturday, March 1) at 10 a.m., while Michigan will kick off the second day at 1:45 p.m. with the weight throw.
