LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team claimed four event victories on the final day of the UCLA Rafer Johnson Invitational on Saturday (April 9) at Drake Stadium.
Freshman Cody Riffle (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) won the shot put (18.40), while redshirt sophomore Matthew Campbell (Rochester, Mich./Rochester), who won the 200-meter dash (21.28) in the final event yesterday (Friday, April 8) and the 100-meter dash (10.87) today, ran the leadoff leg of today's winning 4x400-meter relay (3:11.79) -- that finished ahead of the professional squad BK Radical Ryders -- combining with freshman Ali Arastu (Northville, Mich./Northville), sophomore Aaron Taylor (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) and redshirt freshman Troy Sneller (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton). Arastu claimed first just before the relay in the 400-meter hurdles.
The Wolverines did not win an event on day one on Thursday (April 7), as the trio of redshirt sophomore Kurt Reichenbach (Brighton, Mich./Pinckney Community), redshirt senior Frank Shotwell (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and junior Joe Strizich (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prep) were the only U-M athletes in action, competing in the first five events of the decathlon, with Reichenbach holding second at the end of the day.
Yesterday, the decathlon trio finished up the event, with Reichenbach the top Wolverine in a third-place finish (6,774 points). Shotwell, who posted the best discus mark (41.24 meters), was right behind with 6,738.
Michigan gained six runner-up finishes as well -- one Friday and five Saturday. Taylor clocked in right behind Campbell in the 200-meter dash (21.72) yesterday, before U-M posted four second-place efforts in the first six events today -- redshirt freshman Ethan Dennis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) in the hammer throw (53.67 meters), U-M's top quartet in the 4x100-meter relay (41.16), Peddlar in the long jump (7.36 meters), and Taylor in the 100-meter dash (10.93). Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Troy Sneller (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) finished right behind Arastu in the 400-meter hurdles (54.06).
The Wolverines return to Ann Arbor next weekend to host Ohio State in "The Dual." The meet will take place at historic Ferry Field on Sunday (April 17) beginning at 11 a.m.
