WALNUT, Calif. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team was led by 400-meter hurdler Ali Arastu (Northville, Mich./Northville) and hammer thrower Ethan Dennis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville), who each recorded wins on the second day of the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday (April 20) at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
Sophomore Arastu ran a personal-best time of 50.54 to place first in the 400-meter hurdles, while junior/sophomore Dennis reached a mark of 62.53 meters (205-2) to win the hammer. Dennis' toss was just 0.22 meters shy of his school-record setting throw he registered last weekend at the Spec Towns Invitational (April 13-14).
Michigan's 4x400-meter relay team improved upon last weekend's season-best time, stopping the clock at 3:08.88 to finish runner-up. The relay team was comprised of freshman Philip Washington (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield), Arastu, senior/junior Matthew Campbell (Rochester, Mich./Rochester) and sophomore Eric Oliver (Berkeley, Calif./Homewood-Flossmoor [Ill.]). The Wolverines finished 1.33 seconds behind first-place Minnesota.
In the 110-meter hurdles, sophomore Herman Washington (Blacklick, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) finished seventh in a time of 14.35, which matched his season-best time recorded at the Spec Towns Invitational.
Thursday's action was highlighted by Michigan's distance runners. Fifth-year senior Craig Forys (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) clocked a time of 8:44.59 in the Olympic Development 3,000-meter steeplechase to place sixth. In the 'University A' section of the 10,000-meter run, sophomore Morsi Rayyan (Dewitt, Mich./St. Johns) took third in a personal-best time of 29:43.44.
Michigan will not compete in any events tomorrow (Saturday, April 21) on the final day of the Mt. SAC Relays. The Wolverines will be back in action when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa., to compete in the historic Penn Relays from April 26-28.
