LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team sent split squads to a pair of competitions on Saturday (April 19), participating in the Kentucky Relays and Beach Invitational. The Wolverines had four student-athletes finish second in field events -- javelin, hammer throw, long jump and high jump -- at the Kentucky Relays.
Sophomore Stephen Burk (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) got things started for the Wolverines with a second-place finish in the javelin behind Kentucky's Raymond Dykstra (76.25m). Burk had a toss of 61.29 meters (201-01 feet) on this third of six attempts to earn runner-up status in the event.
Michigan continued its string of second-place showings as fifth-year senior Ethan Dennis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) was runner-up in the hammer throw. Dennis had a career-best and school-record toss of 66.36 meters (217-08 feet) to finish behind Purdue's Chukwuebuka Enekwechi (68.41 meters). Dennis broke his school-record mark on the second toss of the competition.
Junior/sophomore Derek Sievers (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) set a career best in the shot put with a toss of 17.69 meters (58-00.50 feet), placing him fifth in the event, two spots better than senior/junior teammate Justin Gaumer (Holly, Mich./Holly), who posted a throw of 17.06 meters (55-11.75 feet). The duo competed in the discus later in the afternoon, with Sievers placing seventh with a toss of 50.63 meters (166-01 feet) and Gaumer finishing 13th with a throw of 46.37 meters (152-01 feet).
In the long jump, senior/junior Patrick Cochran (Erie, Pa./McDowell) placed second with a leap of 7.11 meters (23-04.00 feet). Cochran's jump was seven inches behind winner Tyler Anderson of Tennessee State (23-11.00 feet or 7.29 meters).
The Wolverines placed three competitors in the top 10 of the high jump, with fifth-year senior Bradley James (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett) finishing as the runner-up. Bradley cleared 2.04 meters (6-08.25 feet) to place second behind winner Justin Kretchmer of Kentucky (2.09m). Freshmen Stephen Sykes (Litchfield, Mich./Litchfield) and Louis Lamberti (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey) finished seventh and 10th, respectively. Sykes set a personal best by clearing 1.99 meters (6-06.25 feet) and Lamberti fell just shy of his career high by clearing 1.94 meters (6-04.25 feet).
Junior/sophomore Codie Nolan (Morenci, Mich./Adrian) turned in the top showing for the Wolverines at the Beach Invitational, notching personal bests in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Nolan finished eighth in the 100-meter dash (10.81 seconds) and placed 10th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.74 seconds. Nolan time of 10.81 seconds clipped his previous mark of 10.82 seconds set earlier this year at the North Florida Invitational (March 29). Nolan's mark in the 200m dash was his best time in a little more than a year in the event.
