PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team wrapped up competition at the Penn Relays on Saturday (April 24) at Franklin Field, as the quartet of senior Brandon Fellows (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island), freshman Brendon Blacklaws (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College), freshman Dallas Bowden (Hastings, New Zealand/Nelson College) and fifth-year senior Lex Williams (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) finished third in the mile relay (16:20.56) and eighth in the 4x800-meter relay (7:34.16).
Senior Sean McNamara (Elmhurst, Ill./York) was the other runner in action on Saturday, taking 10th place in the mile developmental run (4:13.67). To cap off the Penn Relays for Michigan, senior Brendan Lodge (Narragansett, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) finished in ninth place in the hammer throw on Saturday with a high mark of 55.34 meters (181-6 feet). He was the only U-M field athlete in action this week at the Penn Relays.
On Thursday (April 22), redshirt freshman Bobby Aprill (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) and fifth-year senior Tony Nalli (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) scored top-10 finishes in the 10,000-meter run, finishing in fifth place (29:45.88) and eighth place (30:14.75), respectively. Both earned season-best marks. Junior tri-captain Craig Forys (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) led a trio of Michigan distance runners in the 5,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 11th place in the championship heat with a time of 14:14.96. Fellows took 25th place (14:35.15), while senior Peter Christmas (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) came in 24th place in the secondary heat (14:50.91).
Williams, the nation's leader in the 10,000-meter run, did not run the event; instead, he was a part of Michigan's distance medley relay team on Friday (April 23). Williams was joined by Blacklaws, Bowden and junior David St. Amant (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) to combine for a time of 9:35.24, good enough for a fourth-place finish. It was the first time that Michigan had run that event in a meet this season and it was the only event that Michigan ran on that day.
Michigan splits the squad up again next weekend. The majority of the Wolverines will head to the OSU Jesse Owens Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, beginning on Friday (April 30), while some will head out west to the Stanford-Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., on Saturday (May 1). The two-day event at OSU finishes on Saturday starting at noon.
