SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team competed in the UCSD Triton Invitational held Saturday (April 26), collecting top-three finishers in the shot put, long jump and high jump and a fifth-place showing in the hammer throw at Triton Stadium.
Junior/sophomore Derek Sievers (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) and senior/junior Justin Gaumer (Holly, Mich./Holly) placed second and third, respectively, in the shot put behind winner Igor Liokumovich of Harvard (17.76m). Sievers pushed the steel ball 17.52 meters (57-05.75 feet), while Gaumer set a personal best with a push of 17.38 meters (57-00.25 feet). Both Wolverines had their best tosses of the day on their third attempt of the competition.
Senior/junior Patrick Cochran (Erie, Pa./McDowell) placed third in the long jump with a leap of 7.52 meters (24-08.25 feet), finishing behind winner Ted Hooper from UC Riverside (7.67m) and Central Arizona's Travonn White (7.60m). Cochran's jump was just less than an inch shy of his personal best set last month.
In the high jump, fifth-year senior Bradley James (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett) cleared 2.11 meters (6-11.00 feet) to get third place, while fifth-year senior Ethan Dennis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) finished fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 62.98 meters (206-07 feet). Dennis had his fifth-place throw on his third attempt of the day. The only collegiate competitor to finish ahead of Dennis was Wisconsin's Michael Lihrman (65.39m).
On the track, senior Erick Gavin (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) ran a time of 14.30 seconds to place fourth in the 110-meter hurdles. His time was second fastest among collegiate competitors and.17 seconds shy of her personal best set in April 2013.
U-M will next participate in the Indiana Billy Hayes Invitational on Saturday, May 3, in Bloomington, Ind. The meet will start at 11 a.m.
N O T E S
Sophomore/freshman Chris Maye (10.98 seconds) and junior/sophomore Codie Nolan (11.00) finished ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 100-meter dash out of 49 competitors. The duo also finished in the top 10 of the 200m dash, with Nolan placing seventh (22.07) and Maye earning 10th (22.21).
Sophomore/freshman Stephen Sykes set a personal best in the high jump by clearing 2.01 meters (6-07.00 feet). Sykes finished eighth in the event.
Derek Sievers and Justin Gaumer had career-best throws in the discus. Sievers (52.30m, 171-07 feet) placed 18th in the event, and Guamer (50.01m, 164-01 feet) finished 25th. Sievers had personal-best throws on his first two tosses of the competition, while Gaumer surpassed his previous mark on his fourth throw of the competition.
