COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With most of Michigan's top performers out west at the Stanford-Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., the rest of the University of Michigan men's track and field team got a chance to see top competition at the OSU Jesse Owens Invitational, which concluded on Saturday (May 1) at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Sophomore Matthew Campbell (Rochester, Mich./Rochester) and redshirt freshman James Wade (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) took 25th (48.97) and 27th (49.07), respectively, in the 400-meter dash. In the other two individual races, sophomore Nick Thomas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) took 29th in the 800-meter dash (1:53.07), while freshman Davis Craw (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) took 52nd in the 100-meter dash (11.13).
The Wolverines also ran in both relays. The 4x100-meter relay team of freshman Erik Braun (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney Community), Campbell, junior Nick McCampbell (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical) and Craw took 13th collectively with a time of 42.30. The 4x800-meter relay team of Wade, junior David Sweeney (Oswego, Ill./Oswego), senior Jeff Merrill (Lodi., Calif./Lodi) and Thomas took 15th place (3:19.85) in one of the final races of the day.
There was little action during Friday evening's (April 30) session for Michigan. Redshirt freshman Zach Ornelas (Cedar Park, Texas/Vista Ridge) finished 22nd in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:25.33), joining a trio of pole vaulters -- sophomore Taylor Voice (Boyne City, Mich./Boyne City), senior Chris Baldwin (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) and freshman Austin DeWildt (Wyoming, Mich./Catholic Central) -- in competition. Voice was 27th (4.60 meters/15-1 feet), Baldwin was 36th (4.45 meters/14-7 1/4 feet) and DeWildt was 38th (4.30 meters/14-1 1/4 feet).
Michigan returns home for its only home meet of the season next weekend, hosting the U-M Len Paddock Invitational, beginning on Friday (May 7) at 6 p.m. and finishing on Saturday (May 1) at noon. It will be Michigan's final meet before heading to the Big Ten Outdoor Championships the following weekend in Bloomington, Ind.
