PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Junior Robert Peddlar (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Boys) and freshman Brendon Blacklaws (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College) of the University of Michigan men's track and field team won the long jump and the 1,500-meter run, respectively, on Saturday (May 1), setting new career highs event wins at the Stanford-Jordan Invitational Cobb Track at Angell Field.
Peddlar's jump of 7.36 meters (24-1 3/4) is a new career best, breaking his old personal best of 24-1 1/2 feet, which he set at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational in January. He also took fifth in the triple jump (14.17 meters/46-6 feet). Meanwhile, Blacklaws crossed the finish line at 3:49.35 in the fifth heat, better than his previous career best of 3:51.60 (set April 10 at "The Dual") and better than his teammates, senior Sean McNamara (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and freshman Dallas Bowden (Hastings, New Zealand/Nelson College), who both ran in other heats. McNamara was eighth in the fourth heat (3:53.64) and Bowden was 10th in the third heat (3:52.13).
Every Michigan sprinter that ran scored a top-10 finish on Saturday. Freshman Aaron Taylor (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams) continued his stellar spring season with two more solid runs, finishing in fourth place in the 200-meter dash (21.98) and seventh place in the 100-meter dash (11.14). Sophomore Nicholas Neuman (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and junior David St. Amant (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) finished back-to-back in second (48.58) and third (48.78), respectively, in the 400-meter dash. Finally, junior Carl Buchanon (South Bend, Ind./Clay) was the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles, taking second with a time of 51.66, a new outdoor season best.
In the final event for U-M, the 5,000-meter run, redshirt freshman Bobby Aprill (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) led the way in the third heat with a time of 14:27.79 and a 14th-place finish, with senior Brandon Fellows (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) crossing the line at 14:37.11 and grabbing a 22nd-place finish. Fifth-year senior Lex Williams (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) closed out the evening with a 19th-place finish in the first heat of the 5,000-meter run (13:56.21), on the same track which he recorded the nation's fastest time in the 10,000-meter run just a little over one month ago (March 26 at the Stanford Invitational).
Michigan returns home for its only home meet of the season next weekend, hosting the U-M Len Paddock Invitational, beginning on Friday (May 7) at 6 p.m. and finishing on Saturday (May 8) at noon. It will be Michigan's final meet before heading to the Big Ten Outdoor Championships the following weekend in Bloomington, Ind.
