TOLEDO, OHIO -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team wrapped up the regular season on Friday and Saturday (May 2-3) at the Toledo Invitational. The Wolverines won seventh events and recorded 18 top-three performances throughout the two-day event at UT's Fetterman Outdoor Track and Field Facility.
Michigan's 4x100-meter relay highlighted the weekend's competition, winning the event with a season-best time of 40:25, which ranks third all-time in school history and is currently fourth in the Big Ten standings. The relay consisted of sophomore/freshman Codie Nolan (Morenci, Mich./Adrian), fifth-year senior Matthew Campbell (Rochester, Mich./Rochester) , senior Aaron Taylor (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) and junior Justin Clarke (Flint, Mich./Southwestern).
The 4x400-meter relay was also victorious, clocking a winning time of 3:13.87. The relay team was comprised of Campbell, sophomore Philip Washington (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield), junior Ali Arastu (Northville, Mich./Northville) and Taylor.
In his first collegiate 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore/freshman Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) finished first with a time of 8:51.55, which ranks second in the Big Ten. Senior Zach Ornelas (Cedar Park, Texas/Vista Ridge) ran a runner-up time of 9:12.30.
Sophomore/freshman August Pappas (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:21.03.
Michigan claimed five of the first six spots in the 800-meter run, with senior Brendon Blacklaws (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College) winning the event with a time of 1:51.12. Freshman Nate Chapman (Auburn Hills, Mich./Avondale) followed on Blacklaws' heels in second place at 1:52.72.
The Wolverines dominated the hurdle events, as junior Ali Arastu (Northville, Mich./Northville) won the 400-meter hurdle title with a time of 52.33 and junior Herman Washington (Blacklick, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) placed first in the 110-meter hurdles in 13.99. Junior Erick Gavin (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) finished runner up behind Washington with a time of 14.23 and senior/junior Troy Sneller (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) took third in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.38.
In the 1,500-meter run, junior/sophomore Nathan Karr (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) (3:51.36) and sophomore/freshman Jeff Sattler (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) (3:52.28) placed second and third, respectively.
Several members of U-M's relay teams also finished top three in their individual events. Clarke took second in the 100-meter dash (10.66), Campbell placed third in the 200-meter dash (21.65) and Philip Washington finished runner up in the 400-meter dash (48.28).
In the field, pole vaulter, senior Jack Greenlee (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) (5.05 meters, 16-6.75) and long jumper freshman Antonio Whitfield (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) (6.83 meters, 22-5) each finished second in their respective events.
The Wolverines will begin the championship portion of their season at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, which will be hosted by Ohio State University next Friday through Sunday (May 10-12).
