COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team was led by a third-place finish by senior/junior Ethan Dennis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) in the hammer throw on the first day of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Friday (May 10) at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

With six points from Dennis and one from junior/sophomore Mark Beams (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) in the 10,000-meter run, the Wolverines are currently in sixth place with seven points after the first of three days of competition.

Dennis's best mark of the day came on his final throw, when he reached a distance of 62.45 meters (204-10) to take over third place. He tallied six points for the Wolverines and earned a spot on the podium.

In the 10,000-meter run, Beams, sophomore/freshman Scotty Albaugh (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott) and the rest of the field competed in a torrential downpour under the lights. After sitting in the middle of a connected string of runners for the majority of the race, Beams and Albaugh slowly crept forward and eventually secured eighth and ninth place, respectively. Beams clocked a time of 29:45.51, while Albaugh recorded a personal-best time of 29:48.77.

After five events in the decathlon and a two-hour weather delay following the long jump, fifth-year senior Kurt Reichenbach (Brighton, Mich./Pinckney Community) is currently sitting in eighth place with 3,822 points. He recorded personal-best marks in the 100-meter dash (11.18), long jump (23-0.5, 7.02m) and shot put (40-7.5, 12.38m). Competition was tight in all five events, as the athletes in third through eighth place are separated by just eight points.

The remaining five events of the decathlon will be contested tomorrow (Saturday, May 11), beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the 110-meter hurdles.

The open field events will start at 1:20 p.m. with the long jump, while the running events will begin at 2:10 p.m. with the 4x100-meter relay prelims.
