Forys Clinches Steeplechase Crown on Day Two of Big Ten Outdoors

MADISON, Wis. -- Fifth-year senior Craig Forys (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the University of Michigan men's track and field team on the second day of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Saturday (May 12) at Wisconsin's McClimon Track. Michigan is currently in sixth place with 28 points heading into the final day of competition.

Forys ran a personal-best time of 8:28.90 to set a new Big Ten meet record. He settled in the lead pack in fourth place for the first mile and slowly made a move throughout the next two laps. On the bell lap, Forys and Ohio State's Cory Leslie battled, but Forys pulled away on the final straightaway, edging Leslie by 3.58 seconds.

On the final day of the decathlon, senior/junior Kurt Reichenbach (Brighton, Mich./Pinckney Community) finished 11th overall with a career-best 7,107 points. Reichenbach recorded a season or lifetime best in each event except the javelin. He was sitting in 12th place going into the final event, the 1,500-meter run, where he took seventh in a season-best time of 4:35.74 to boost him into 11th.

Michigan had two athletes qualify for tomorrow's (Sunday, May 13) finals. Freshman Philip Washington (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) ran a personal-best time of 47.19 in the 400-meter dash to earn the last at-large spot in the finals. Sophomore Ali Arastu (Northville, Mich./Northville) won the second heat of the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 51.38 to automatically qualify for tomorrow's finals.

Sophomore Erick Gavin (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) finished one spot shy of advancing to the finals of the 110-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 14.30 to finish ninth in the prelims.

Michigan will compete in the shot put, triple jump, javelin, 5,000-meter run, and 4x400-meter relay, as well as the finals of the 400-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles on Sunday. Action at the McClimon Complex will begin at 11 a.m. CDT.

• After running a time of 8:28.90 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Craig Forys moved into a tie for second on the all-time performance list at Michigan with former Wolverine Dan Heikkinen (1977-81).

Craig Forys met the U.S. Olympic Trials automatic 'A' standard of 8:32.00 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with his time of 8:28.90.

• The last time Michigan had two athletes win Big Ten titles at the outdoor championships in the same year was 2009. Carl Buchanon won the 400-meter hurdles and Adam Harris won the 100- and 200-meter dash in 2009.
