BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- University of Michigan men's track and field junior tri-captain Frank Shotwell (Medina, Ohio/Medina) set a new school record in the decathlon on Saturday (May 15) at the 2010 Big Ten Outdoor Championships, highlighting the second day of action at the Robert C. Haugh Complex. Fellow juniors Craig Forys (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) and Robert Peddlar (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Boys) also scored points for Michigan during the second day. As a team, the Wolverines remain in sixth place with 26 points.
Shotwell, who won the decathlon in 2008, missed out on claiming the title for a second time in his career by just two points. R.J. McGinnis (Minnesota) won the competition with 7,381 points. Still, Shotwell's point total of 7,379 broke the old record by 17 points, set nearly two years ago to the day (May 17, 2008, at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships). Shotwell will be an All-Big Ten second team selection. Sophomore Kurt Reichenbach (Brighton, Mich./Pinckney Community) was the other U-M decathlete in action, taking 12th (5,850 points).
Elsewhere in the field, Peddlar was unable to repeat as the conference's long jump champion but finished in fourth place with a far jump of 7.23 meters (23-8 3/4 feet). Peddlar won the long jump at the indoor conference championships in February, beating Korbin Smith (Ohio State), who won on Saturday.
On the track, the only two Michigan finals qualifiers were both junior hurdlers. Nick McCampbell (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical) took fourth place in the preliminaries in the 110-meter hurdles (14.24), while Carl Buchanon (South Bend, Ind./Clay) was fourth in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles (52.21). Sophomore Nicholas Neuman (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) missed out on the finals of the 200-meter dash by a mere tenth of a second and settled for a 10th-place finish (21.57).
Forys concluded the final day with a fourth-place showing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:48.18).
The 2010 Big Ten Outdoor Championships conclude tomorrow (Sunday, May 15) at 12:30 p.m., beginning with the shot put.
