JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Sophomore Ali Arastu (Northville, Mich./Northville) led the University of Michigan men's track and field team on the opening day of the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds on Thursday (May 24) at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium. Arastu qualified for the quarterfinals of the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 51.47 to finish 12th overall.
Arastu will compete in the quarterfinals tomorrow (Friday, May 25) at 7:30 p.m. The top three athletes in each of the three heats, plus the next three fastest times, will advance to the NCAA Championships, to be held June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Freshman Philip Washington (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) represented Michigan in the 400-meter dash, finishing 36th with a time of 47.37.
In the 10,000-meter run, sophomore Morsi Rayyan (Dewitt, Mich./St. Johns) was just two spots shy of advancing to the NCAA Championships, placing 14th in a time of 30:41.62.
Arastu will be joined by five other athletes competing tomorrow, including sophomore Herman Washington (Blacklick, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) in the 110m hurdles, fifth-year senior Craig Forys (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) and junior Zach Ornelas (Cedar Park, Texas/Vista Ridge) in the 3,000m steeplechase, as well as junior/sophomore Ethan Dennis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) and freshman Brad Bolton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) in the hammer throw.
