JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team began competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds Thursday (May 29) at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium, with senior/junior Morsi Rayyan (Dewitt, Mich./St. Johns) and junior/sophomore Derek Sievers (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championship field with 12th-place finishes.
Rayyan posted a time of 30:05.24 to earn the final spot available for the NCAA field. Sophomore August Pappas (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) placed 33rd in the event with a time of 31:18.89, and junior Mark Beams (Vicksburg, Va./Vicksburg) pulled up and was unable to finish.
Sievers was the Wolverines' top competitor in the shot put with a personal-best toss to place 12th in the event, earning a spot in the NCAA Championship field. Sievers achieved a new career best and reset the school record at 18.85 meters (61-10 1/4 ft.). Senior/junior Cody Riffle (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) finished 20th (18.14m), and senior/junior Justin Gaumer (Holly, Mich./Holly) placed 41st (16.83m).
There were two other notable Wolverine performances. Sophomore Stephen Burk (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) finished 39th in the javelin with a heave of 58.91 meters (193-3 feet), and senior/junior Patrick Cochran (Erie, Pa./McDowell) placed 31st in the long jump with a leap of 23-4 3/4 feet (7.13m).
