JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Junior/sophomore Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) of the University of Michigan men's track and field team posted the top time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds (May 30) at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium, qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the event.
Ferlic won his heat and had the fastest time of all 48 competitors at 8:38.74. His time set a personal best by more than three seconds; his previous best time was 8:41.83 set at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds last year (May 24, 2013).
In addition to Ferlic, senior/junior James Yau (Troy, Mich./Troy) also competed in the steeplechase, finishing 23rd with a personal-best time of 8:55.73. Despite his career-best time, Yau failed to advance to the NCAA Championship field after placing eighth in the second heat.
In the hammer throw, junior/sophomore Brad Bolton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) and fifth-year senior Ethan Dennis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) were unable to advance to the NCAA Championship field in the hammer throw. Bolton finished 25th with a throw of 60.80 meters (199-6 feet), and Dennis placed 35th with a toss of 57.58 meters (188-11 feet).
The Wolverines will finish competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds on Saturday (May 31). Action begins at noon, with the final event commencing at 5 p.m.
