DES MOINES, Iowa -- Redshirt junior Craig Forys (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) of the University of Michigan men's track and field team finished ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Friday (June 10), clocking in at a time of 8:44.88 at Drake Stadium. With his top-16 finish, Forys earned All-America second team honors in his first-ever appearance at an NCAA meet.
Forys becomes U-M's first All-American since Adam Harris in 2009 and the school's first All-American in the 3,000-meter steeplechase since John Mortimer in 1998. Prior to 2010, the USTFCCCA and the NCAA named only first team All-Americans, making Forys the first U-M student-athlete to make the second team in program history.
Conditions were less than ideal for the race, as periods of rain dampened the track throughout the day. He entered Friday's finals with the 13th-fastest time of all 24 qualifiers but won the second heat in the semifinals on Wednesday (June 8) with a time of 8:41.59, making him the fifth-fastest individual in program history.
Matt Hughes (Louisville) won the race in 8:24.87.
