EUGENE, Ore. -- Junior/sophomore Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) of the University of Michigan men's track and field team qualified for the 3,000-meter steeplechase final on the second day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday (June 12) at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
Ferlic competed in heat two of the steeplechase, where he finished third in 8:49.20 to clinch one of five automatic-qualifying spots in Saturday's (June 14) final. After being the fourth runner over the first water barrier, he moved into second place and held on to that position going into the bell lap. Coming into the final straightaway, he had slipped into fourth place but edged Oklahoma's Alex Deir before the finish line by .09 seconds.
Ferlic will return for the steeplechase final on Saturday (June 14) at 2:57 p.m. PDT. The championships will be live on ESPNU from 2-4 p.m. PDT. There will be no Wolverines in action tomorrow (Friday, June 13).
