SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Junior/sophomore Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) of the University of Michigan men's track and field team qualified for the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase during Friday's (June 27) prelims at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held at Sacramento State University's Hornet Stadium.
In heat one, Ferlic started out in the back half of the 10-man pack and remained there for the first five minutes. Right at the five-minute mark, he made an aggressive move into fourth place and a group of five runners began to distance themselves from the rest of the pack. He remained in fourth place heading into the bell lap but was passed with 250 meters to go.
With enough separation from the rest of the pack, Ferlic easily cruised to a fifth-place finish in a time of 8:38.99 to earn one of the five automatic qualifying spots into Sunday's (June 29) final, which is scheduled for 1:52 p.m. PDT. Sunday's action can be seen live on NBC from 1-3 p.m. PDT.
Former Wolverine and 2012 Big Ten steeplechase champion Craig Forys was also in action, taking fourth place in heat two at 8:41.82. He will also join Ferlic in the 3,000-meter steeplechase final
