ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Eleven members from the University of Michigan men's track and field team have qualified for the NCAA East Region Preliminaries, which begin next Thursday (May 27) on the campus of North Carolina A&T State in Greensboro, N.C. The three-day event runs through Saturday, May 29, and will determine the field for the NCAA Outdoor Championships (June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore.). Twelve competitors from each individual event and 12 teams from each relay event advance from each preliminary site to the final championships meet.

The list of qualifiers from Michigan is headlined by senior Lex Williams (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter), who will be joined by freshman Bobby Aprill (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) in the 10,000-meter run. Williams is ranked second in the east region in the race, having run a 28:34.28 at the Stanford Invitational on March 26. His time was the nation's best until May 1, when Sam Chelanga of Liberty broke it with a time of 27:08.39. The other distance runner in action will be junior tri-captain Craig Forys (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Junior hurdlers Carl Buchanon (South Bend, Ind./Clay) and Nick McCampbell (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical) both qualified in their respective races -- Buchanon in the 400-meter hurdles and McCampbell in the 110-meter hurdles. Closing out the participants on the track is U-M's 4x400-meter relay team of Buchanon, sophomore Nicholas Neuman (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), junior David St. Amant (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) and sophomore Matthew Campbell (Rochester, Mich./Rochester), with freshman Aaron Taylor (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams) as the alternate.

Three of Michigan's top field performers are also headed to Greensboro. Senior Sean Pruitt (Cato, Wis./Valders) will throw the discus, senior Brendan Lodge (Narragansett, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) will be in the hammer throw and junior Robert Peddlar (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Boys) is entered in the long jump.

Michigan will have at least one representative at the NCAA Championships in a few weeks, as junior Frank Shotwell (Medina, Ohio/Medina) has qualified in the decathlon. At the Big Ten Outdoor Championships last weekend (May 14-16) in Bloomington, Ind., Shotwell came within two points of winning his second conference crown in the decathlon, finishing in second place with a new school record of 7,379 points, breaking the old mark, which he set in May 2008. The decathlon is not contested at the east or west preliminary, but since Shotwell is ranked among the top 24 decathlon performers in the nation, he automatically qualifies for the nationals.
