ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior distance runner Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn/Mounds Park Academy) of the University of Michigan men's cross country and track and field teams was voted to the Capital One Academic All-District 5 team today (Thursday, May 29) by the College Sports Information Directors of America. An aerospace engineering major, Ferlic now advances to the Academic All-America team ballot; that team will be announced Thursday, June 26.
Ferlic earned All-America honors with a 22nd-place finish at the 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championship after finishing third at the Great Lakes Regional where he helped U-M to the team title and earned all-region honors. He finished ninth at the 2013 Big Ten Conference Championship and was named to the All-Big Ten second team. He has twice been named to the Academic All-Big Ten team (2013, '14).
On the field, Ferlic was a second-team All-American in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at last year's NCAA championship. He currently ranks ninth in the east region and 16th nationally in the steeplechase (8:47.91). At the 2014 Big Ten indoor championship, Ferlic finished sixth in the 3,000-meter run (7:56.60) and seventh in the 5,000 (14:00.68). At the outdoor Big Ten meet two weeks ago, he placed third in the steeplechase (8:50.15) and fifth in the 5,000 (14:11.12).
Thirteen members of the U-M men's track and field team are competing at the NCAA East Preliminaries this week (May 29-31) in Jacksonville, Fla., including Ferlic in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000-meter run.
