ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Bonus points proved the difference in the No. 11-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team's 20-19 loss to No. 17 Nebraska in its Big Ten Conference opener on Friday evening (Jan. 11) in front of 1,013 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. The Cornhuskers won early and late in the dual, earning a technical fall and late pin to hand U-M its first home loss of the season.

With the dual starting at 157 pounds, Nebraska claimed three of the opening four weight classes from its top-10 wrestlers at 157, 174 and 184 pounds. Freshman Taylor Massa (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS) kept the score close with a quick pin at 165 pounds, scrambling out of an early single-leg shot to lock up a bottom-leg cradle and stick Austin Wilson at the 0:45 mark. Massa, ranked 11th in the latest InterMat poll, leads the Wolverine team with five pins on the season.

The Wolverines bookended the intermission break with three consecutive wins to take a five-point lead in the team race. Junior/sophomore Max Huntley (Emerald Isle, N.C./Blair Academy) took advantage of a buzzer-beater takedown in the second to edge Caleb Kolb, 3-1, at 197 pounds. Huntley, ranked 18th, shot in deep with 15 seconds remaining in the frame and after getting Kolb on the mat, wrapped up the second leg on the edge of the mat as time was called.

Fifth-year senior Ben Apland (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) used a big third period to knock off Spencer Johnson, 8-3, in the heavyweight contest. After a scoreless first period, 19th-ranked Apland picked up the pace in the second, scoring on a late single leg before adding a pair of takedowns riding-time advantage in the third. Apland improved to 3-0 in dual competition.

Senior/junior Sean Boyle (Lowell, Mass./Blair Academy) turned over the lineup with a 15-7 major decision over Eric Coufal at 125 pounds. The Wolverine wrestler converted on six takedowns -- three apiece in the first and third periods -- and a second-period reversal to control from start to finish. With the major in mind late, Boyle cut Coufal twice in the final frame and finished on a late single leg to lock up the bonus point after riding time.

U-M appeared in the driver's seat, but Nebraska stole away the lead with back-to-back wins in swing matches at 133 and 141 pounds, including a first-period pin in the former. The Cornhuskers' Shawn Nagel countered an early attack from freshman Rossi Bruno (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) to claim the initial lead before throwing the Wolverine rookie straight to his back late in the period, ending the bout at 2:14. Sophomore/freshman Camryn Jackson (Lansing, Mich./Eastern HS) sacrificed an early lead in the subsequent bout as Ridge Kiley took advantage of a late takedown and ride out in the second period to win 4-3.

Senior/junior Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) knocked off eighth-ranked Jake Sueflohn, 3-2, on a late third-period takedown but could not earn the necessary bonus points to propel U-M to team victory. Sueflohn struck first, scoring on an early single leg in the first and with a one-point lead and riding-time advantage, chose neutral to start the third period. Grajales, ranked 12th, countered a late shot to secure his first lead, coming around behind and returning the Husker to the mat before riding him out for the win.

The Wolverines will close out the weekend on the road, heading to Madison, Wis., to face No. 22-ranked Wisconsin at 1 p.m. CST on Sunday (Jan. 13) at UW Field House.
