MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team rallied from an intermission deficit but could not hold its advantage, falling at No. 22 Wisconsin, 19-16, on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 13) inside the UW Field House. The Wolverines earned four major decisions, earning bonus points in all individual wins but were doomed by four close losses -- by two points or less -- in swing matches.
With the team score deadlocked at 16-16 entering the final bout, the Badgers' 11th-ranked heavyweight Connor Medbery used a second-period tilt and a subsequent takedown to claim a 6-2 decision over fifth-year senior Ben Apland (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) to seal his team's victory. The decision was the third in a row for Wisconsin, which claimed the 184-pound match on an overtime single leg and won on a third-period stalling call at 197 pounds.
The Badgers also won three of the opening five matches, winning in overtime at 141 pounds and on late third-period takedown in the 157-pound match.
Senior/junior Sean Boyle (Lowell, Mass./Blair Academy) opened the dual with his second major-decision victory of the weekend, scoring three takedowns -- one in each period -- en route to a 12-0 win over Matt Cavallaris at 125 pounds. Boyle jumped to a sizable early lead after scoring on a front headlock and three-point leg turk in the first. He added a low single in the second and scored off a hard snap down in the third and accumulated 3:47 in riding-time advantage.
Wisconsin matched the bonus point with a major decision from third-ranked Tyler Graff at 133 pounds, before Tom Kelliher gave the Badgers their first advantage with a 7-5 overtime win against senior/junior Mike Hillock (Massillon, Ohio/Perry HS) in the latter's season debut at 141 pounds.
Senior/junior Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) rallied back from an early deficit against Cole Schmitt at 149 pounds, using a big third period to secure a 14-6 major decision. The Wolverine wrestler, ranked 12th, lost a pair of scrambles in the first period but stole away the lead late, reversing Schmitt to his back at the buzzer to claim a one-point lead. He reversed again in the second and added takedowns in the second and third before using a leg turk in waning moments to earn three points and the necessary major-decision margin.
Wisconsin won again before the intermission break, claiming a narrow 9-7 decision at 157 pounds, before the Wolverines claimed back-to-back major decisions at 165 and 174 pounds to build a six-point advantage in the team score.
Freshman Taylor Massa (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS), ranked 13th, scored seven takedowns to cruise past Frank Cousins, 18-4, at 165 pounds. Massa spent the bulk of the match on top but could not find a turn, settling instead for two stall points and 4:09 in riding-time advantage.
Senior/junior Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS) put on a similar display at 174 pounds, rolling to a 12-1 major decision against the Badgers' Ben Cox behind three takedowns, a two-point tilt in the first and 5:39 in time advantage.
The Wolverines (6-3, 0-2 Big Ten) will return home next Friday (Jan. 18), hosting Iowa at 7 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena.
