ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team dropped its third straight dual to a ranked Big Ten Conference opponent, falling to No. 4 Iowa, 33-10, on Friday evening (Jan. 18) in front of 1,830 fans at Cliff Keen Arena.

Senior/junior Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) and fifth-year senior Ben Apland (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) claimed individual victories at 149 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, for the Wolverines. The latter came via forfeit in the dual's final match.

Grajales cruised to his third straight Big Ten victory, defeating Brody Grothus, 12-3, at 149 pounds. The Wolverine wrestler, ranked 11th, jumped out to an early first-period lead after scoring off a quick hip toss and twice turning Grothus in a nearside cradle for five points. He added reversals in the second and third periods -- the latter restoring his major-decision margin after giving up a counter takedown -- and accumulated 2:17 in riding-time advantage.

Michigan dropped decision losses at 125, 165 and 197 pounds. Senior/junior Sean Boyle (Lowell, Mass./Blair Academy), ranked 19th, wrestled top-ranked Matt McDonough close at 125 pounds until the two-time NCAA champion secured a pair of takedowns in the third to seal an 8-2 victory.

Sophomore/freshman Connor Brancheau (Fenton, Mich./Lake Fenton HS) made his collegiate dual debut at 165 pounds, stepping in for 13th-ranked freshman Taylor Massa (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS), and dropped an 8-2 decision to 18th-ranked Nick Moore. The Hawkeye wrestler scored three takedowns -- two in the first period -- and built up 1:34 in time advantage.

Junior/sophomore Max Huntley (Emerald Isle, N.C./Blair Academy) fell to Nathan Burak, 5-2, at 197 pounds after the Hawkeyes used a pair of second-period takedowns to break open a deadlocked match.

The Wolverines (6-4, 0-3 Big Ten) will continue Big Ten action next Sunday (Jan. 27), hosting Northwestern at 2 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. Michigan will offer a free pre-meet clinic from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Keen Arena. Full details will be announced soon.
