ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team suffered its first shutout loss in 28 seasons, falling to top-ranked Iowa, 36-0, in its Big Ten Conference opener on Friday evening (Jan. 22) in front of 1,850 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. With the victory, the Hawkeyes extended their winning streak to 53 consecutive matches.
Iowa claimed bonus points in five individual matches, including four of the opening five. Michigan's best effort came at 133, 165 and 197 pounds, where sophomore captain Zac Stevens (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS), senior/junior Aaron Hynes (Mt. Morris, Mich./Flint Kearsley HS) and senior/junior captain Anthony Biondo (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley HS) all lost by three points or less.
Neither Stevens nor sixth-ranked Daniel Dennis scored an offensive point in the 133-pound contest. The two wrestlers traded early flurries in the first period before Dennis gained the advantage with a second-period ride out. He added an escape in the third and fought off Stevens' late charges, neutralizing a position on the mat in the final seconds to hang on, 2-0.
Iowa's fifth-ranked Ryan Morningstar needed overtime to get past Hynes, 6-4, at 165 pounds. Morningstar scored first, converting on a single leg -- fighting for it on the mat -- midway through the opening period. Hynes responded with a single leg of his own midway through the second period before Morningstar knotted it up with a third-period escape. Hynes fought off a deep single-leg shot late to send the match into overtime, where the Hawkeye wrestler used an inside trip to end it with 21 seconds on the clock.
While Biondo held the higher ranking and the early lead against Luke Lofthouse at 197 pounds, the Hawkeye controlled the final period to win 9-6. Biondo, ranked ninth in the latest InterMat poll, scored on an immediate double before Lofthouse quickly reversed the position. He added three takedowns in the third frame, including one at the final buzzer, to ice the match.
The Wolverines wrap up weekend action tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 23) against No. 5-ranked Minnesota. The dual is slated for a 7 p.m. start at Cliff Keen Arena.
