CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team split its regional dual meets at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 17), falling to host No. 9 Oregon State, 22-13, before earning a 27-19 victory over No. 25 Oklahoma at the Beavers' Gil Coliseum. No. 7-ranked Virginia Tech, the regional's fourth team, defeated OSU to advance to next week's championship.
Oklahoma forfeited two of the opening five weights -- at 133 and 149 pounds -- but balanced them with a pair of technical falls and an upset decision at 125 pounds to lead 13-12 midway through the dual. The Sooners added another decision at 165 pounds, padding their lead to four points, after fourth-ranked Bubby Graham used a five-point move in the second period to defeat freshman Taylor Massa (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS), 5-1. After scoreless first period, ninth-ranked Massa earned a quick escape in the second and had Graham in a front headlock late in the frame and was attempting to take him down when the Sooner wrestler put him on his back. It was the match's only offensive points.
The Wolverines took three of the final four matches, earning a pair of six-point wins with a fall at 174 pounds and a disqualification at 197. Senior/junior captain Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS), ranked 10th, built up a sizable 7-1 advantage through the first two periods against Matt Reed, scoring on three takedowns and escape, and with the Sooner wrestler pressing in the third pancaked to secure the fall at the 5:23 mark.
Junior/sophomore Chris Heald (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS) capped his 10-4 comeback win over Nolan McBryde with a throw of his own at the final buzzer of the 184-pound match. McBryde led 3-1 after a first-period takedown and second-period escape, before Heald rallied with a stall point and double leg in the second. Factoring in a Heald escape and McBryde's narrow riding-time advantage, the match was knotted up 5-5 late when Heald bodylocked McBryde to his back -- and rode off the time advantage -- to take the win.
Michigan's final win came at 197 pounds, where junior/sophomore Max Huntley (Emerald Isle, N.C./Blair Academy) earned a disqualification victory over Brad Johnson at the 5:40 mark. Huntley was leading 5-3 at the time after scoring on a pair of first-period takedowns and held 1:00 in time advantage when, in a front headlock position, Johnson twice bite down on Huntley's hand to earn a flagrant misconduct call and immediately end the bout.
The Wolverines took four individual wins in the morning contest against host Oregon State and held a narrow lead late, before OSU claimed each of the final three bouts to pull away.
Senior/junior Sean Boyle (Lowell, Mass./Blair Academy) opened the dual with a 10-6 decision over Joey Palmer at 125 pounds, scoring on four takedowns -- two apiece in the first and second periods. Oregon State earned back-to-back in the subsequent matches, including a major decision from fourth-ranked Mike Mangrum at 141 pounds.
Senior/junior Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) avenged an earlier-season loss to Scott Sakaguchi at 149 pounds, using a pair of takedowns to defeat the seventh-ranked Beaver wrestler, 6-3. He came around to score on the edge early in the first period and countered on a single-leg attack late in the frame. Grajales, ranked 10th, gave up no offensive points, including a locked-hands call in the second.
Massa and Yates won back-to-back matches at 165 and 174 pounds, earning bonus in the latter, to give U-M a narrow three-point advantage. Massa nearly had bonus himself, scoring six takedowns against Seth Thomas, including three in the second period but lost his major margin on a late Thomas takedown out of a scramble, settling for a 13-7 decision.
Yates also scored six takedowns, including three in the opening period, to cruise to a 14-4 major decision over Cody Weishoff. The Wolverine captain, who rode for 2:10, iced the match with a counter attack in the closing 15 seconds.
The Beavers surged ahead with three straight wins at the upperweights to close out the dual, including come-from-behind victories at 184 and 197 pounds. OSU retook the lead and kept it with a second-period pin from Austin Morehead in the former bout, rallying from a 3-0 deficit to throw Heald to his back and get the fall at 4:16.
The Wolverines will take the next several weeks to prepare for the Big Ten Championships, scheduled for March 9-10 in Champaign, Ill. Hosted by the University of Illinois, the tournament will be held at Assembly Hall.
