MADISON, Wis. -- With seven individuals alive in the consolation bracket, the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team sits in eighth place after (49 points) the first day of competition at the Big Ten Conference Championships on Saturday (March 8) at Wisconsin's Kohl Center.

Michigan has four wrestlers in the consolation semifinals, including senior/junior Steve Dutton (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point HS), fifth-year senior Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) and freshman Domenic Abounader (Gates Mills, Ohio/St. Edward HS), who all dropped semifinal matches to higher-seeded opponents to slide into the wrestlebacks.

Dutton, seeded fourth at 141 pounds, dropped a 4-0 decision to Penn State's top-seeded Zain Retherford in the semifinal round. The Nittany Lion wrestler scored a quick double leg in the first period and rounded out the frame before adding an escape in the second. He ended the bout with 1:15 in time advantage. Dutton picked up an earlier 7-0 quarterfinal win over Iowa's fifth-seeded Josh Dziewa, scoring takedowns in the second and third periods and two back points out of a late scramble.

Grajales, seeded fifth at 149 pounds, fell to Nebraska's top-seeded Jake Sueflohn, 8-6, in his semifinal contest, giving up takedowns late in the second and early in the third. Grajales cut into the gap with a takedown of his own late and cut Sueflohn looking for more but could not score again. The Wolverine senior avenged an earlier season loss with a 4-1 decision over Iowa's fourth-seeded Brody Grothus in the quarterfinals, scoring on a two-point near fall in the second period and a reversal in the third.

Abounader, seeded fifth at 184 pounds, also avenged a dual loss in the quarterfinals, using riding time to edge Nebraska's fourth-seeded T.J. Dudley, 5-4. After giving up a quick takedown in the first, Abounader responded with an equally quick reversal and later in the frame, returned Dudley to his back for a two-point near fall. Abounader lost to Penn State's top-seeded and two-time defending NCAA champion Ed Ruth, 9-1, in the semifinal round.

Freshman Brian Murphy (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North HS), seeded eighth at 157 pounds, went 3-1 on the day and bounced back from a quarterfinal loss with two wins in the evening wrestlebacks. He avenged an earlier loss to Penn State's fifth-seeded Dylan Alton in his last match of the day, countering a late PSU single-leg shot and scoring out of the ensuing scramble to win, 3-1.

Three additional Wolverines -- sophomore/freshman Conor Youtsey (Parma, Mich./Mason HS), fifth-year senior Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS) and senior/junior Collin Zeerip (Fremont, Mich./Hesperia HS) -- slid into the seventh-place matches at 125, 165 and 174 pounds, respectively. Youtsey and Zeerip posted two wins on the day, while Yates claimed one.

The Wolverines had three wrestlers eliminated after suffering their second loss on the opening day of competition, most notably top-seeded freshman heavyweight Adam Coon (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville HS), who went 0-2. Penn State's Jon Gingrich used a low single-leg takedown off the whistle to edge Coon, 3-1, in the quarterfinals. Coon had an apparent takedown reviewed and overturned in the second period. The Wolverine rookie also fell to Ohio State's Nick Tavanello, 6-5, in the wrestlebacks. Both wrestlers scored takedowns in the first period, but Tavanello took control with a single leg midway through the third.

Michigan will wrap up action at the Big Ten Championships tomorrow (Sunday, March 9). The third session is slated to begin at 11 a.m. CDT, while the finals will start at 1 p.m. and be aired live on the Big Ten Network.
