DES MOINES, Iowa -- With its final six representatives eliminated from competition, the University of Michigan wrestling team saw its 2012-13 season come to an end on the second day of competition at the NCAA Championships on Friday (March 22) at Wells Fargo Arena.

Freshman Taylor Massa (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS) lost in the evening session's All-America round, falling to Iowa State's Michael Moreno, 17-2, after the Cyclone wrestler jumped out to an early and significant advantage. Moreno scored on a pair of double legs in the first period and cradled Massa up in the closing 40 seconds of the frame. He added a reversal, three back points and two more takedowns -- the latter ending the bout at the 5:56 mark.

Massa's evening loss followed another in the morning quarterfinal round, where Oklahoma State's fourth-seeded Tyler Caldwell used a first-period takedown and 4:24 in time advantage to claim a 3-1 decision.

The Wolverines' other five wrestlers all split their morning consolation matches, winning their first wrestleback matches of the day before losing to end their tournament bids. All finished with 2-2 records at the NCAA event.

Senior Sean Boyle (Lowell, Mass./Blair Academy) avenged an earlier-season loss with a 10-6 decision over Utah Valley's Jade Rauser in his first 125-pound bout of the day, rallying from an early deficit with a pair of reversals and single-leg takedowns apiece. He lost to North Dakota State's ninth-seeded Trent Sprenkle, 6-3, in the last match after giving up a quick takedown and two near-fall points. He cut the gap with a throw-by single late in the frame but was ridden out in the second as Sprenkle accumulated 1:58 in time advantage.

At 133 pounds, freshman Rossi Bruno (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) was all square with Penn State's Jeff Conaway in the third period when he was thrown to his back and pinned at the 6:17 mark. After a scoreless first period, Conaway had struck first with an escape and double leg but Bruno evened the score with a reversal and escape early in the third. The Wolverine rookie used a first-period high crotch and third-period escape to edge Lehigh's Randy Cruz, 3-1, in his first match.

Senior/junior Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) split matches against a pair of seeded wrestlers at 149 pounds, knocking off Penn State's 11th-seeded Andrew Alton, 8-1, before losing to Binghamton's third-seeded Donnie Vinson, 12-0. Grajales used a big second period to defeat Alton, scoring on a five-point double leg and subsequent tilt for two. He fell behind big early against Vinson, who countered a drag attempt to score and added a three-point late in the period. Vinson also scored on a reversal in the second and a double leg in the third.

Senior/junior Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS) pushed the pace throughout his 174-pound wrestleback match against Missouri's Todd Porter, but the Tiger wrestler scored on a pair of counter takedowns and rode for 1:38 en route to a 6-2 decision. Yates defeated Gardner Webb's Hunter Gamble, 7-0, in the first round of the day, scoring on takedowns in the first and second periods and earning 1:25 in time advantage.

Fifth-year senior heavyweight Ben Apland (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) appeared to have the upper hand entering the third period against Bucknell's Joe Stolfi -- tied 2-2 with choice -- but was ridden out and turned for two points late to fall 6-2. Apland edged Edinboro's Ernest James, 2-0, in the first round of the day on a second-period escape and pair of stall calls.
