ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team hosted its annual Maize & Blue Intrasquad dual on Sunday (Nov. 1) at Cliff Keen Arena. The Blue team used a late comeback at the upperweights to claim an 18-15 decision in the team competition.

With several Wolverines out due to injury, illness or participation in the NWCA All-Star Classic, also taking place today in Atlanta, Georgia, Michigan only contended true wrestle-offs at three weights while filling out the lineup with several exhibition matches.

Junior/sophomore George Fisher reclaimed his starting spot at 141 pounds, earning a 4-1 decision over fellow junior/sophomore Cameron Kennedy to sweep the best-of-three series. Fisher struck first, scoring out of a wild first-period scramble before adding an escape in the second and 1:13 in riding-time advantage. Fisher was an NCAA qualifier last season after bumping up from 133 pounds late in the first semester.

Freshman Logan Massa battled to a 5-4 decision over sophomore Garrett Sutton to sweep the series at 165 pounds. Massa built up an early advantage, finishing on single-leg takedowns in the first and second periods and rode just short of a minute before giving up an escape in the third. Sutton finished on a takedown of his own out of a flurry at the buzzer to narrow the final score. Sutton was an NCAA qualifier a year ago, while Massa was the No. 2-ranked recruit in last year's class.

Junior Domenic Abounader also swept the series to reclaim his starting job at 184 pounds, earning a 12-3 major decision over fifth-year senior Ben Ralston with five takedowns. He scored two apiece in the first and third period and rode for 4:28 time advantage. Abounader is the reigning Big Ten Conference champion at the weight.

Among those featured in the exhibition contests were a pair of starters from a year ago. Sophomore Alec Pantaleo earned a 15-5 major decision over senior/junior Angelo Latora at 149 pounds with seven takedowns, including three in the first period, and 1:50 riding-time advantage. Sophomore/freshman Davonte Mahomes, who posted a 13-3 mark at 174 pounds last year before losing the season to injury, earned a 10-4 decision against junior/sophomore Ernest Battaglia on four takedowns and 2:16 riding time.

Newcomers featured heavily at the lowerweights. Senior/junior Cory Lester took the 125-pound exhibition with a 6-2 decision over freshman Mike Volyanyuk, scoring takedowns in the first and third periods and riding for 1:53. Freshman Sal Profaci rallied from an early deficit to defeat fellow freshman Ben Lamantia, 4-3 at 133 pounds. Lamantia struck first on a second-period takedown, but Profaci responded with one of his own in the waning seconds of the frame and held on for the win.

In a second exhibition bout at 141 pounds, sophomore/freshman Malik Amine used a third-period escape and 1:50 riding-time advantage to defeat sophomore/freshman Zehlin Storr.

Senior/junior Cody VanderHagen also used a comeback to defeat senior/junior Aaron Calderon, 4-3, at 157 pounds, scoring a second-period takedown and adding a pair of escapes. Jackson Striggow closed out the dual with a major decision over Ty Wildmo in another all-freshmen bout at 197 pounds. Striggow finished on three takedowns -- two in the first period -- and added a two-point near fall and 2:44 in riding-time advantage.

The Wolverines will complete their wrestle-off at most weights at a later date.

Michigan will officially kick off the 2015-16 season in two weeks, heading to Troy, New York, for the annual Journeymen Northeast Duals on Sunday, Nov. 15. The Wolverines will face Sacred Heart (9:20 a.m.), West Virginia (11:15 a.m.) and Hofstra (3:15 p.m.).
