ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team set its 2013-14 starting lineup on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 3), establishing nine of 10 weight classes at its annual Maize & Blue Intrasquad at Cliff Keen Arena. The Blue team claimed the intrasquad win, edging Maize, 22-17.
"I was pleased, and I think all the coaches were pleased, with today," said head coach Joe McFarland. "We saw a lot of good things. It's tough sometimes when it's teammate versus teammate, and in some of these, it was roommate versus roommate. But I thought they did a good job of pushing past that. We solidified our starting lineup. I thought it was good to see some guys come back from earlier losses. This is a different environment than the practice room. So, it was nice to see them perform here in this environment. Now it's time to put this behind us and keep moving forward. We've got the whole season ahead of us."
Sophomore/freshman Conor Youtsey (Parma, Mich./Mason HS) and junior/sophomore Ben Ralston (Oxford, Mich./Oxford HS) both claimed two wins today to rally from a series deficit and earn the starting positions at 125 and 174 pounds, respectively. Youtsey defeated fifth-year senior and three-year starter Sean Boyle (Lowell, Mass./Blair Academy), 10-2 and 4-2, in the intrasquad matches, using a first-period takedown and 1:26 in riding-time advantage to take the rubber match.
Three Wolverines will appear at different weight classes. Fifth-year senior Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS) and senior/junior Max Huntley (Emerald Isle, N.C./Blair Academy) will both move down a weight to 165 and 184 pounds, respectively, while junior/sophomore Chris Heald (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS) moves up to weight class to 197 pounds. Huntley earned a quick first-period fall in the 184-pound contest, while Heald registered three takedowns en route to a 7-3 decision in his final wrestleoff bout.
In addition to Ralston, the intrasquad produced one additional first-time starter in sophomore/freshman Angelo Latora (Portage, Mich./Central HS), who claimed a 1-0 decision over freshman Cameron Kennedy (Richmond, Ill./Burton HS) on a second-period escape.
Freshman Brian Murphy (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North HS) swept his 157-pound series against senior/junior Jake Salazar (Midway, Utah/Wasatch), earning a decisive 7-0 victory on a takedown, two-point near fall and reversal in the second match, but Murphy will redshirt the 2013-14 season.
Additional wrestleoff matches will occur at a later date.
Michigan will officially open its season at the EMU Duals on Saturday, Nov. 16, squaring off against Northern Illinois (10 a.m.) and Kent State (11:30 a.m.) at Bowen Field House.
