ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team set its 2014-15 starting lineup Sunday afternoon (Nov. 9), establishing eight of 10 weight classes at its annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad at Cliff Keen Arena. The Maize team cruised to victory, defeating Blue, 23-7.
The first round of wrestle-offs took place last Wednesday (Nov. 5) in the practice room at the Bahna Wrestling Center, with the intrasquad providing the second match in each series. Two weight classes -- 149 and 184 pounds -- required a rubber match.
At 149 pounds, junior/sophomore Angelo Latora claimed an 8-3 decision to force a third and final match. Freshman Alec Pantaleo dominated the second period of the rubber match, notching a takedown on a single-leg high trip and back points on a blast double to seal with a 12-5 victory.
The 184-pounders provided some exciting wrestling with two very close matches. In the first match today, graduate student Jeff Holm chose to start the second period down, and promptly picked up the escape to take the lead. He followed with a blast double to extend his lead and held on to take a 4-1 decision. In the thirdm deciding match, sophomore/freshman Ayoola Olapo recorded three third-period points to force overtime before notching a takedown and three back points in the second sudden-victory frame to seal a 10-5 decision. Olapo will wrestle-off against sophomore Domenic Abounader, the Wolverines' returning starter, at a later date.
Sophomore/freshman George Fisher and junior Rossi Bruno battled through a scoreless first period at 133 pounds, but Bruno recorded some near fall points in the second and a reversal in the third to pick up the 5-0 decision and clinch the starting spot for the third straight year.
Fifth-year senior Steve Dutton notched a 6-0 decision over freshman Zac Hall at 141 pounds. Dutton scored quickly in every period, scrambling for a takedown early in the first. He also started the second period down and picked up an escape and began the third period with a throw for a quick takedown.
The 157-pound match was a fast-paced one between sophomore Brian Murphy and fifth-year senior Jake Salazar. Murphy scrambled to an early takedown and held onto a 2-0 lead after the first. He picked up a quick escape to start the second period and rode out the third period en route to a 4-0 decision.
Freshman Davonte Mahomes put his speed on display in the 174-pound match, racking up nine takedowns in a 20-10 major decision over senior/junior Ben Ralston. Mahomes will join Pantaleo as true freshmen in the Michigan this season.
Sophomore Adam Coon played the takedown game at heavyweight with sophomore/freshman Payne Hayden. Coon racked up a seven-point lead then closed the second period with a three-point near fall. He secured with a 19-6 major decision to close the dual.
In exhibition action, freshman Garrett Sutton used the textbook single leg trip to clinch a 10-4 victory over sophomore/freshman Aaron Calderon. Sutton will finish his wrestle-off against junior/sophomore Taylor Massa at a future date.
