EAST LANSING, Mich. -- In its final tune-up before the dual-meet season, the University of Michigan wrestling team crowned four individual champions and boasted nine total placewinners at the Michigan State Open on Saturday (Nov. 12) at the Spartans' Jenison Field House.

Fifth-year senior Kellen Russell (High Bridge, N.J./Blair Academy), junior/sophomore Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS) and fifth-year senior Justin Zeerip (Fremont, Mich./Hesperia HS) were perfect in their first competition of the season, capturing individual titles at 141, 165 and 174 pounds, respectively.

Russell, who went 5-0 with three bonus wins, defeated Central Michigan's Scott Mattingly, 5-2, in the 141-pound final, scoring on a first-period takedown and a third-period reversal while accumulating 3:25 in riding-time advantage. Russell, who went 38-0 last season en route to the NCAA 141-pound title, extended his winning streak to 44 straight matches.

Yates claimed bonus points in all four victories at 165 pounds, recording two pins and two major decisions, including an 11-3 victory over Northwestern's Pierce Harger in the championship match. Yates converted on four takedowns against the Wildcat wrestler -- three in the second period and built up 4:13 in time advantage.

Zeerip also went 4-0 with a win over a Northwestern wrestler in the championship round, using takedowns in the first and second periods to cruise past Lee Munster, 6-0. He also picked up an 8-5 decision against Michigan State's Curran Jacobs in the semifinal round, scoring on three takedowns, including two in the final period.

Freshman Justin Dozier (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven HS) rounded out Michigan's individual champions, capturing the heavyweight crown in the freshman/sophomore division with a 5-0 record. He needed the second round of tiebreakers to defeat Illinois' Chris Lopez, 3-2, in the championship match. Dozier owns a perfect 9-0 record in his rookie campaign.

Michigan will kick off the dual-meet portion of its 2011-12 schedule with a pair of road event next weekend. U-M will face Buffalo at 5 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 18) at Alumni Arena in Buffalo, N.Y., before heading to Pittsburgh, Pa., to face Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 19) at Fitzgerald Field House.
