YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team split its season-opening dual matches, defeating Northern Illinois, 22-9, before narrowly falling to Kent State, 17-16, at the EMU Duals on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 16) at Bowen Field House.
Five Wolverines posted 2-0 records on the day: sophomore/freshman Conor Youtsey (Parma, Mich./Mason HS), sophomore Rossi Bruno (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS), fifth-year senior Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS), junior/sophomore Ben Ralston (Oxford, Mich./Oxford HS) and freshman Adam Coon (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville HS). Youtsey, Ralston and Coon were perfect in their varsity debuts for the Maize and Blue.
Youtsey, ranked 11th in the latest InterMat poll, cruised in his first varsity at 125 pounds, using a pair of takedowns, two stall points and 2:17 in riding-time advantage to earn bonus with an 8-0 major decision against Northern Illinois' Braun Marquez.
Bruno and sophomore/freshman Angelo Latora (Portage, Mich./Central HS) followed with decisions at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively, to pad U-M's early advantage to 10-0. Bruno converted on single legs -- one in each period -- to roll past Nick Smith, 8-2, in his season debut, while Latora similarly scored a takedown in each period and added two near-fall points in the second frame to beat Tyler Argue, 11-5, in his first varsity match.
The Huskies' Morse brothers, Gabe and Andrew, won back-to-back matches at 149 and 157 pounds, using a last-second takedown to secure a 5-4 upset win over No. 5-ranked fifth-year senior Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) in the former.
Michigan responded with three straight wins of its own to extend its advantage. After a scoreless first period at 165 pounds, Yates used a second-period single leg to gain control against Sam Bennett, adding a two-point tilt in the third and 3:27 in time advantage to win 6-0.
Ralston gave up the initial advantage -- on a second-period reversal -- to Billy Chancey at 174 pounds, but rallied with a third-period takedown to claim a 4-2 decision victory. Ralston couldn't quite finish on a deep shot late in the frame but countered a Chancey double-leg attack moments later to score the winning points.
After a scoreless first period, senior/junior captain Max Huntley (Emerald Isle, N.C./Blair Academy) surged in the later frames, to cruise against Caleb Busson, 9-3. Huntley had trouble finishing early but converted two single legs in the second and another in the third while accumulating 2:30 in riding time.
NIU picked up a decision win at 197 pounds before Coon capped the dual with 3-3 double-tiebreaker victory against Jared Torrence at heavyweight. The wrestlers traded escapes in regulation and each of the tiebreaker sets, and Coon, needing to ride the Husky wrestler for just five seconds in the second 30-second frame, succeeded, winning the bout on three seconds of time advantage.
The Wolverines split matches evenly against Kent State in the second contest but lost the dual on bonus points -- a KSU technical fall at 157 pounds providing the difference.
Michigan again started on a roll, earning back-to-back comeback decisions at 125 and 133 pounds after Youtsey and Bruno both gave up early takedowns. Youtsey responded with a takedown of his own late in the first period against Alfredo Gray, adding takedowns in the second and third periods and building 2:57 in time advantage to seal a 9-4 decision. With the 133-pound match tied 2-2 going into the third, Bruno surged ahead with two takedowns in the frame to edge Mack McGuire, 7-4.
The Golden Flashes won three straight matches at the middleweights, including the bonus victory at 157 pounds, to even the score then pull ahead by five points.
Yates earned bonus of his own with a 14-1 major decision against Clay Wenger at 165 pounds, breaking through in the second with two takedowns and six back points -- off a bow and arrow and subsequent tilt. He rode Wenger for the entirety of the third, drawing a pair of stall points and accumulating 3:36 in time advantage.
Ralston overcame a significant early five-point deficit to defeat Caleb Marsh, 8-7, at 174 pounds and secure his straight comeback victory of the day. After giving up a takedown and three-point near fall, Ralston cut the gap with a late reversal in the first period. With Marsh visibly exhausted, Ralston went on the attack, scoring single legs late in the second and midway through the third. The latter evened the match score and Marsh immediately took injury time, giving Ralston choice. He selected bottom, escaped to earn his first lead and held off a late attack by the Golden Flash wrestler to earn the win.
Kent State won back-to-back matches at 184 and 197 pounds -- the former in overtime -- to carry a four-point lead into the final bout at heavyweight. Coon largely controlled the contest against Mimmo Lytle but could not get in on his legs, settling for a 2-0 decision victory on a pair of escapes.
The Wolverines will wrap up the busy non-conference weekend tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 17), hosting No. 12 Oregon State at 2 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena.
